EQUIPMENT
600 MHz Spectrometer
Secured access to a 600 MHz Bruker NMR with both 5 mm and 1.7 mm cryoprobes, including a SampleJet for automated acquisitions.
For more details on the NMR facility click below:
ÄKTA FPLC Systems
2 ÄKTA Pure chromatography systems (L1, and M1 with multichannel detection) "enable fast purification of proteins, peptides, and nucleic acids, from microgram to tens of grams of target product."
Tissue Culture Facility
We have our own biosaftey cabinets and incubators in a seperated TC room, for work with mammalian cell cultures or baculovirus expression systems.
Imaging and Housing for HT Crystal Screens
Automated imaging system for protein crystallization. These robotics "incubate and capture high quality images on a user-defined schedule. Load your plates and go."
Dropsetter for HT Crystal Screens
Gryphon system for "blending biomolecule with precipitant screens in 96-well format. The drop setter can be used for microseeding and additive screens, and can dispense volumes from 100nL to 100μL."
Access to all core facilities at IRIC, including bio-imaging, bioinformatics, genomics, HTS and medicinal chemistry, histology, proteomics, transgenesis and biophysics (CD spectrometer, ITC, AUC, etc.)
LAB SPACE
Smith Lab
Our lab is situated on the 4th floor of IRIC. We have the complete array of small instrumentation available and ample bench room. The lab is just steps from our tissue culture area, FPLCs, crystallography suite, and office space.
IRIC
IRIC has two specific mandates:
-
Accelerate the discovery of new cancer therapies
-
Train the scientists of tomorrow
"Our core values are excellence and integrity in teaching and research, creativity, innovation, collaboration, and collegiality."
Office Space
There is a seperated office and computer area for technicians, postdocs and graduate students (with a view!). A computational core running software for structural biology is also available (click below).
Université de Montréal
It has Quebec's largest sponsored research income and the third largest in Canada. Close to $524.1 million to research conducted in more than 150 research centres as of 2011. It is the second-largest university in Canada in terms of student enrolment.
MONTRÉAL
The City
Montréal is the largest city in Quebec and the 9th-largest in North America. It is one of the most bilingual cities in Canada (English and French), and is an important centre of commerce, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, design, gaming, film and more.
Food
"From deli counters, to diners, to BYOB, to break-the-bank..." Montréal has the most restaurants per capita (outside of NYC) in North America. Click em:
Festivals
A distinctive characteristic of Montréal's vibrant cultural life are it's many festivals. Our favorites:
Living
Each borough of Montréal has its own character. Some are predominantly English, others very French. Montréal has the lowest rental costs of any major Canadian city. Downtown is filled with nightlife, there is superb transit & family neighbourhoods.
MERRIMENT;)
A Little Food and Drink
We are highly motivated in our work, but also to sample what this great city has to offer! Let's try hard to make sure everyone enjoys their time working both inside and outside of the lab.
Outings and Retreats
As we build our group, we plan to add an annual retreat somewhere around Quebec. Skiing anyone? We'll also try to get out and enjoy some activities around Montréal.
